Don’t exclude yourself from donation! Register!
It may be surprising to learn that there are very few rule-outs for donation, and no health information is needed to join the donor registry. People of all shapes, sizes, ages and ethnicities are encouraged to register. Being registered allows your decision to be a donor known if and when that time comes.
In all donor cases, qualified physicians and medical personnel evaluate the suitability of organs, corneas and tissues at the time of death. There is no way to know when a person may become a donor and what options may exist at that time. Conditions that may rule out donation today may not in the future.
For those under 18 years of age, parental consent is not required to register, but it is required before donation. Parents of young donors often say their child’s registration gave them peace of mind because it helped them know what their child would have wanted.
License to donate.
When teens apply for their learner’s permit and that first driver’s license, many proudly say “Yes” when asked by the driver’s license office staff if they would like to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor. Saying “Yes” will indeed register the new driver with Donate Life Texas. However, until they are of legal age, parental consent is required at the time of death before donation can be considered.
